Multi Media Players

VLC Media Player

VLC media player (also known as VLC) is a highly portable open-source media player and streaming media server written by the VideoLAN project. VLC is a free and powerful open source cross-platform multimedia player. It's lightweight, fast, easy to use multimedia player that plays most video and audio formats, including
OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac as well as DVD, Audio CD, VCD, and various streaming protocols. It even supports for playing back zipped files and supports many new devices and BluRay Discs.

I have been using VLC media player for years and it has proven to be a robust media player for me. It has basic but highly customizable skins, which also supports Winamp 2 and XMMS skins.  Along with the improvements in its versions, it continues to offer support to wide formats like the videos in the AVCHD format, a highly compressed format used in recent HD camcorders.  It can play the video content of some damaged, incomplete, or unfinished videos (for example, files still downloading) and in some cases can be used to preview files being downloaded. Adding subtitles to video files using VLC is easy - just add the SRT file to the folder where your video is kept, and VLC will automatically play with subtitles. VLC is able to convert media files into various supported formats, be it audio or video.  VLC media player can create screencasts and record the desktop. It is a cross-platform media player, with versions for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux.

VLC also provides an ActiveX plugin, which lets people view QuickTime (MOV), Windows Media, MP3, and Ogg files embedded in websites when using Internet Explorer. It supports many web browsers including Firefox, Mozilla Application Suite, and other Netscape plug-in based browsers; Safari, Chrome, and other WebKit based browsers; and Opera.
